The Grand Moments

I write to you today from the home where most of our greatest childhood memories come from– my grandparents’ old house. Its been two years since my grandfather passed and looking back on the 19 years we spent together, a part of him will always remain within me. Like most grandfathers he was man of wise words but above all he was a great listener, always asking his grandchildren to tell him something new about their lives or the world. Each morning on my drive to school with my mother we would stop by his house to make his breakfast. And each morning I would fetch his daily edition of the LA Times and hand it to him. In return he would immediately hand the Sports section to me, knowing very well that I was an avid fan of the Lakers and back then hopeless Clippers. Though he had no clue about sports in general, it was reading those newspapers in the mornings which instilled in me the affinity I have for all sports today. To say the least it didn’t stop there. When I wasn’t reading a newspaper it was always a sight to see my grandpa watch FOX News. Having been a well-educated, self-made man who came to America from a Communist country, there was nothing he disagreed with more than Democrats and CNN (except for Larry King he really had some special admiration for his show). It’s safe to say thats where my love for politics rose. Though at times I may have disagreed with my grandfather’s political views, they certainly made sense and to this day in the back of my mind I ask myself what he would think about ObamaCare or Russia trying to start another Cold War. More than anything what would make his day was telling him how I felt and my thoughts of how situations would play out. It was engaging in those conversations that I miss the most. So with every newspaper I pick up or political debate I participate in, a small piece of my grandfather remains with me forever.
Lastly if youre looking for a good movie to watch this last week of May I would highly suggest an old favorite of my grandpas “Scent of a Woman” with Al Pacino.
